Summer Learning Journey: Week One Day Two Activity Two: The Rules of Engagement!

Activity Two: The Rules of Engagement
During the early years in New Zealand, men and women would often marry at a young age. Women were expected to have babies and remain in the home caring for their children. Few, if any, left home in search of work. Men, on the other hand, were expected to work outside of the home.

These days, we don’t have the same strict expectations about work. Girls and boys can choose their own path in life. In fact, I was lucky enough to go to university and to follow my dream of becoming a teacher!

What is your dream job? Draw a picture of yourself doing your dream job and post it on your blog. You could be a doctor, an actor or even a zookeeper! I have drawn myself taking a picture of a beautiful castle in Poland because I would love to become a travel blogger and photographer one day.

I would love to be an author because I would love to teach kids about the world.
Sorry if I don't have much detail in my picture.

Summer Learning Journey: Week One Day Two Activity One: A House or a Home!

Day Two: It’s all in a Day’s work
Activity One: A House or a Home!

In the 1800s, most Māori lived in villages called pa. Each village had many buildings – kauta where people cooked, pataka where they stored goods and wharepuni where the Māori slept. A traditional wharepuni had a thatched roof and walls made of timber, fern, rushes and bark. Look at the picture below of a traditional wharepuni. Does it look like your house?

On your blog, compare the wharepuni to your own home. What are two similarities and two differences between a Wharepuni and your house?

Summer Learning Journey: Week 1 Day 1 Bonus Activity: Waka Ama

Bonus Activity: Waka Ama
To this day, the people of New Zealand still use waka. Instead of using their waka to transport them from one place to another, they sometimes use waka in special events and in sporting competitions such as Waka Ama. Both boys and girls compete in Waka Ama boat races.

Watch this short video of a Waka Ama race. On your blog tell us whether you would like to be in a Waka Ama race one day. Why or why not?

I would like to participate in the Waka Ama race one day because I love races and I
am really competitive in any kind of competition.

Summer Learning Journey: Week 1 Day 1 Activity Two: Setting Sail

Activity 2: Setting sail
The first settlers to come to New Zealand must have been really brave! They had to leave their original homes and sail thousands of miles across the ocean on a special boat called a ‘waka’ to reach New Zealand.

Imagine that you were on board one of the wakas. On your blog, write a short letter to a friend telling them about your voyage to New Zealand. In the letter be sure to tell them how you feel about moving to a new country. If it was me, I would have felt really nervous…

Dear Aaliyah,
I am presently in a Waka and on my way to New Zealand.
I am very nervous but thrilled at the same time.
I do wish you could be here with me.

Safe regards
Maris Stella

Summer Learning Journey: Week 1 Day 1 & Activity 1: The first Settlers

Day 1: Arriving in New Zealand…

Day one: Arriving in Nz
Activity 1: The First Settlers

It is widely believed that the first people to arrive in New Zealand came from Polynesia. Most historians believe that they landed in New Zealand over 700 years ago. Although they were originally from many different countries, these settlers learned to live together and, eventually, formed their own distinct culture known as ‘Māori.’  Māori have their own language, traditions, and culture.

Follow this link to read a short story about a famous man in Māori mythology – Maui. On your blog, post three facts that you learned about this interesting man. What other stories have you heard about Maui?

.
Fact 1 - He never gives up
Fact 2 - He is the youngest out of the 5
Fact 3 - He won't listen to any negativity

Imagine that you have just entered the zoo. On your blog, tell us what you think you might see on your visit. You can start with this sentence:
I had just entered the zoo when, all of a sudden, I saw a big grey elephant trunk appear in front of my eyes. I see tall brown spotted necks of tall giraffes.

Let’s imagine that you have been asked to host a visitor from another country. They are going to come and stay with you for three days. During that time, you are expected to take them on a tour of New Zealand and show them some our most famous icons. Where would you take them? If it was me, I might take them to Mt Cook in the south island, to the Sky Tower in Auckland and to Chums Beach in the Coromandel. What about you? On your blog, tell us which three famous places in New Zealand you would go with your visitor.

If I had a host visitor and I had to take them to three famous places I would take them to the Waikato River, The Sky Tower in Auckland, and Napier Art Deco in the North Island.

On your blog tell us which of the icons you would most like to visit in your chosen country. Be sure to tell us why you have chosen it!
I would like to visit the Big Ben in England. I chose to visit the Big Ben because I wanted to do some research about it and learn about why it is so special to people.

Create a brand new public holiday for the country.  Use your creativity to come up with a name for the holiday and a short description of how people in the country celebrate the holiday. Do they all get the day off? Do they eat special foods or go to special events to mark the day?
I would create a new holiday and call it Pacific Islander Day.  People in New Zealand will get to have their day off and there will be no school. They can do anything they want and they can celebrate in anyway they want. They will try all sorts of of new island food from different islands and best of all they will spend time together doing fun things.

Imagine that you are visiting on the national holiday of your chosen country. On your blog tell us what you would eat, see and do on that day.
I have chosen Australia as my chosen country. I would eat some steak and eat some chips. On The National Day of Australia some people attend to local community festivals, concerts or parties. Everyone take the day off work and people get together for a barbecue.

After exploring the gallery you decide to walk across the street to the national museum. It is an amazing place! There is so much information about the history of the country in this museum. It’s hard to know where to start!
After walking for a little while you come across a display with pictures of children that were taken in 1901 (over 100 years ago)! In this picture, the children are working on a local farm, milking cows. They are not going to school. Back in those days, children usually went to school until they reached the age of 12 or 13. They then left school and went to work. Imagine that you were alive 100 years ago. How would you feel if you had to leave school at the age of 12? Would you be happy or sad? On your blog, tell us how you would feel.
I would feel sad because I would want to leave school at the age of 14. The only reason why I would want to leave school at the age of 14 is because I would like to be more educated and to be a good smart thinking person who would always happy and brainy.

When you walk into the local gallery, the first piece of artwork that you see is a painting by Wassily Kandinsky called ‘Swinging.’

While you are looking at it, a staff member at the gallery comes up to you and asks you for your opinion of the painting. What do you think of it?
On your blog please tell us:
  1. What do you think of this painting? Do you like it?
  2. If you could buy it and give it to someone, who would you choose?
I would like the painting and I would think that the painting is beautiful and creative. If I bought the painting and I could give it to someone I would give it to my mother because she gives me what I need and I would give it to her as my gift.

Being the prime minister of a country is a big responsibility. Would you like to be the prime minister of New Zealand one day? On your blog tell us what you think. Would you like to be the prime minister?  Why or why not?
I wouldn’t want to be prime minister because it would be a huge responsibility. It would be a huge opportunity for me but I think it would be a bit too much work and I wouldn’t want to be famous. I don’t want to be on a magazine and I don’t want to be on TV.

Some people say that the most powerful person in the world is the president of the United States. His name is Donald Trump and he became the president this past November when he beat out his competitor, a woman named Hillary Clinton. Google ‘Hillary Clinton’ to find out a little bit more about her. On your blog, post three interesting facts about Hillary.
Hillary Clinton is an American politician who was the 67th United States Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013.
Hillary Clinton has a daughter named Chelsea.
She was the only First Lady to have an office with the president's senior staff in the West Wing of the White House.

Here in New Zealand, the prime minister of the country is the Honourable John Key. Imagine that you are Mr. Key and you have the power to create laws (rules) that all people in New Zealand would have to follow. If I (Rachel) were the prime minister I would make a rule that everyone should eat lollies for breakfast. What three (3) rules would you make up if you were the prime minister? On your blog tell us what your three rules would be.
If I was the prime minister and I had to make 3 rules my first rule would I would ban bullying and my second rule would make sure everyone is a clean kiwi. My third rule will be to make everyone have anything they want.

Justin Bieber is arguably one of the most famous musicians in the world right now. He has had (#) of Number 1 hits, including the songs:
Watch the three videos. After you have finished watching them, rank them from #1 (best) to #3 (worst). On your blog, list the three videos in order from best to work and tell us why you have ranked them in that order.
I ranked Love yourself as number one because when I first listened to the first word I didn’t like it until I listened to the full song and then I liked it. I ranked Baby as number two because the video was kind of funny because whenever he went close to the girl she kept laughing and kept turning away from. I ranked Sorry as number three because I didn’t like the video and the lyrics.

Most of us like to watch TV when we have the chance. One of my favourite television shows, at the moment, is called Veep. It’s a show about a woman who becomes the President of the United States. It’s pretty funny! I watch Veep on HBO every Monday night.
What is your favourite television show at the moment? On your blog, tell us the name of your favourite television show and tell us, briefly, what it is about.

My favourite T.V show at the moment is Liv and Maddie. It is about two girls that are identical twins. Maddie is a basketball player in Wisconsin who prefers high tops and high heels. Liv was starring on a hit TV show in Hollywood for the past few years.

  2. What you liked about the show
  3. What you didn’t like about the show
The show that I watched was called icarly episode 3. I liked that how they were creative and made the corn a family. What I didn’t like was when Carly’s brother Spencer said that he couldn’t crush the corn and he ended up crushing it anyway.

Write a short paragraph describing your sporting hero. Who is he/she? Why are they your favourite sportsman?
My sporting hero is Valerie Adams. She is my sporting hero because she gives me hope and sometimes I feel like she inspires me to never give up and to try my best at all the things I do. I feel like she is helping me do the things that I can’t do that is why she is my sporting hero.
